In 1950s Mexico City, an American immigrant in his forties lives a lonely life in the midst of a small American community. However, the arrival of a young student forces the man to finally enter into a meaningful relationship with someone. Daniel Craig was ultimately the one who convinced Luca Guadagnino to play Drew Starkey after watching audition tapes with Guadagnino and telling him, “That’s the guy” after seeing Starkey… William Lee: Sit on Your Ass! Or What’s Left of It After Four Years in the Navy. As seen on The Graham Norton Show: Daniel Craig/Nicola Coughlan/Jesse Eisenberg/Kieran Culkin/Flo (2024). The main reason is that the film was too abstract and seemed stream of consciousness. The overall meaning is to explore loneliness in a strange heart, the difficulty of creating relationships with others, the pain of not being able to love, and the complex emotions of depression. But the presentation technique is very much stream of consciousness, especially the last 20 minutes, which have almost no lines and are used entirely to express the inner world of the male protagonist through various blurs, hallucinations and abstract art forms. Although I understood what the director wanted to express, the form of expression was perhaps not acceptable to the audience and at some point I wanted to leave the stage.
